Because a pregnancy normally takes 10 lunar months, with the delivery around 40 weeks (at the end of 10 lunar months)....
You are in your eight month, but you're not "8 months along" because that means you have completed a full 8 lunar months.
At Week 32 you will be "8 months along" and be entering your ninth month. A Week 36 you'll be nine lunar months along and in your tenth month.
You will spend approximately one month being "9 months along" and being in the tenth month. Babies are often born a couple of weeks before the completion of the 40 weeks/ten lunar months.
Of course, some babies need the whole 40 weeks and a couple of extra weeks after that.
The calendar month is different than the 4-week lunar month, but it kind of works out that the baby is due nine calendar months after conception (just to add a little more complication to this).

Easiest way to determine is take your weeks and divide by 4.
29 weeks is 8 months and 1 week. 40 weeks is 10mths, and right at delivery time!!!
