Not directly that-- rather, we should teach ethics, and about religions, and other cultures of the world. Teach WHY poeple do what they do, how, and just let children be exposed to all people, practices and religions of the world. Then, racism (or any prejudice) will be extremely difficult to develop, given explanations of other cultures' thinking and behavior, and true in depth exploration of how other people live and what they are like.
This would laso fascillitate people's biggest fear: free thinking, given that children would be allowed to see how other people think, and can decide for themselves what is worthy of adoption or rejection, instead of having a certain frame of view "forced" onto them from above....(ie, patriotism, a particular religion, cultural sexist viewpoints etc)
Given that we are forced like that, how can people possibly expect others to be open-minded??

I know that this has been heard MANY times before and I know that I am merely seconding and endorsing when I say this (opposed to giving an authentic answer), but I say this with all my heart's sincerity...
"Ignorance breeds prejudice."
I say teach your children EVERYTHING. Not just what YOUR values are, but EVERYTHING. It's a judgement call really, and YOUR call, when it comes to deciding what to teach them and when to teach them it. Personally though, encourage them to do what they love and to always THINK FOR THEMSELVES instead of riding bandwagons all the time. Sure, you need ground to stand on, roots, something to believe in and to live for, but don't let your own views limit you.
Education is key.
Communication is key.
In today's fast paced moving and growing world, we must all be open minded.
Racism does not make any logical sense, if you really think about it.
(These are just opinions, and some are off-topic, I'm aware. I just thought I'd throw some things out there. All are free and encouraged to disagree if that be the case.) =)

Children aren't born to naturally be racists. Racism is what people teach them.
It probably isn't necessary to teach children not to be racists. Just don't teach them to be racists and don't let anyone else teach them that either.

Well this is a no brainer question.
Of course we should teach our children not to be racists.
God created all living creatures and he did not make ANYONE any more superior then the other.
My little girl is 6 yrs old and just started the 1st grade. She still does not know the difference between black, white or hispanic. To her they are all just her classmates and her friends.

How? Let's get real here. There are individuals in all races who are bent on upholding the negative stereotype; no matter what you teach your kids, the negative will eventually come through and again a generation will come up with I am better because I am not "them" -- whoever they are.

we dont have to teach them not to be. we just need to tell them when they hear racist comments that it is wrong. there are too many racist people in this world already, we MUST keep our kids from falling into the trap

In fact no one likes to raise a racist child, but the life facts push children to be like that, specially when they will be involved to the world big society, and in that time, you will not be able to do anything...

Of course.
But then again, if you listen to Avenue Q (the Broadway musical) you will know that "Everyone's a little bit racist, today..." Look up the rest of the lyrics, if you wish. Ah, how i love Avenue Q :)
