Go do an activity and get your mind on something else. What you're experiencing is culture shock and those moments will pass, but you have to help them along. Oh, by the way, South Africa is lovely.

Man I remember when I went out to Michigan to tryout for the East Michigan football team and made it, I was so homesick I couldnt stay. Its tough when you are away from everything you really care about and people you miss. Honestly though I found the best way to cope with it is to write about it like poetry or even draw your feelings at the time your feeling homesick. It sounds 5th gradeish but it works. People dont really know how many types of depressions there are in the world and your suffering from one. Just make sure you keep yourself busy and when you do think about home dont be afraid to talk about it, you will find alot of people will be much obliged to hear your stories and what its like away from their normal lives.

Hmm how long u been out of AFRICA?...you obviously have internet so Read the S.A newspapers iol.co.za, news24.co.za, star.co.za, www.sabc.co.za, hell if u got broadband & can afford it watch Mnet via kuduclub.com. Oh & maybe drop a mail or phone call to somebody in S.A just to perk you up - there is also S.A radio via Streaming...missing people in S.A gets easier with time, my wife has taken allmost 4 years to stop calling S.A home & get over her pets back in S.A & her folks aswell, bite the preverbial bullet - its hard but you are tough *grin* coming from S.A you will get through it trust me - Oh & biltong & Simba Chips from the local S.A shop help aswell haha, if you looking for S.A shops try www.rainbownation.com for a global list, also join: homesicksouthafricans a yahoogroup for Saffers far & wide in the world.

Keep in touch by the computer for exemple. Look for a webcam and a headset. And you can see the homefront and talk with them like on the telephone. That releases a lot your feeling of homesickness. I also have to do it. Use MSN-Messenger for the cam and use Yahoo for talking with the headset.

I worked in Germany 4 years ago. the worst thing you can do if you are homesick is to phone home! never do that, it's makes everything worse.
listen to some south african music and take some south african sweets or biltong with, even some rooibos tea or amarula!

I am still living in South Africa and i have never moved away. I dont know what i would do ease the feeling of being home sick because it must be a tough one! I think you should keep in close contact with your family and friends here in SA, maybe they will help you feel better. My sympathy goes out to you and i hope you will recover from being home sick soon! Just dont forget about SA!!!

Order Biltong and Droewors from Biltong USA. Also ordering food from the "South African Food Shoppe" takes the edge of missing home away.

Listen to afrikaans, kwaito or any indigenous african music. Get to a place that sells boerewors or pap. And then log onto the homecoming revolution .co .za. If that doesn't help. Call someone from home just to say HI.
