Women want men to provide for the family, but at the same time spend sufficient quality time with the family.
Women want men to make enough money, but not have to work the long hours to earn it.
Enough money to a woman doesn't factor in her shopping sprees, vacations he pays for, dinners he pays for, and his own retirement account.

There were references to how women in the past had to balance work and home life. But, at the same time, those women weren't making nearly as much as their male counterparts were, and they weren't expected to by their husbands.

This is not accurate! Women want a man to do what working mothers have been forced to do for years! Balance work and home life in a way that benefits the family as a whole. Unless she is a gold diggin' fool!
I believe that is what you described.

I don't know where you get off thinking that all women expect and want this. I would be VERY CONTENT to stay at home, raise kids, and be a housewife.
We never go on vacations. We rarely eat out. We both have IRA's. And for shopping sprees....HE is the one that likes to shop (online)!
Get off your high moral horse and get a life!

For some women, yes, this is a true (but unrealistic) point of view.
Then again, men think that the perfect women is one who looks great and can eat whatever she wants, is somewhat educated, but knows when to shut her mouth. Oh and shes great in bed.
Everyone's different- that's what makes dating so much fun!

actually what would be better is if you just come by on paydays, get laid and give me your paycheck then go away again. i'll save up myself and take myself on my own vacation and shopping sprees.

yes, but you forgot something. Women want to enjoy those traditional privileges, while also enjoying total equality with men. I guess it depends on their mood.
