It doesn't work on Yahoo! Answers, but the long way is to go to Format, Font, and the use subscript. Not all word processes will have the same shortcut, but try pressing the Ctrl key and the + key. Do superscript, (above as an exponent) use Ctrl, Shift and the + key.

In Excel it's similar to the above mentioned methods for Word. Type H2O, select the 2 and then: Format ->Cells -> on the "Font-tab select subscript.

Type a 2. Highlight it. Go to Format, then Font, then choose Subscript.

If you don't want to use the mouse to open the required menus... try this. Hit Alt-o(that opens the format menu). Hit enter to select "cells". Then hit Alt-b to select subscript. Then hit enter again to exit the menu.
Use the same combination of keys to undo the subscript...
Alt-o, enter, Alt-b, enter.
Of course, you then have to type the "2" or whatever else you want to make as your subscript.

Highlight the '2', go into your font options (in Word, click Format, click Font), then check the box that says subscript, and click ok.

Unofficial way, write a date, then when word recognises the 'st' or 'th' as a date and subscripts it automatically, insert a 2 and delete the rest.

If you're doing it in HTML, you'd say H2O
If you're doing it in MS Word, you select the 2, go to the format menu, select font, and check "subscript".
