Some people probably genuinely wait for death for some kind of change, or accept alcohol as enough of an alteration, etc . ..but for whatever we may all have in common, be it discovered or undiscovered; I think society, if you think of it as a conscious animal, looks down on the pursuing of altered states of mind if it interferes with its own growth. Society, with an everchanging nucleus, wants to be in control of what goes on within it. It doesnt want anything going on that it doesnt know about

Who says that we all have an inborn desire to pursue an altered state of mind?
I'm sure you could find a psychologist or "social scientist" somewhere who thinks we all have an inborn desire to kill others.
The fact that we have certain desires does not mean we should act on them.
Rationality and reason should rule the world, not emotions.

Because we don't all want to pursue that, and looks beneath us.
