First convert decimal into fraction. Divide this by the number of placements after the decimals by 10.

.1 = 10
.01 = 100
.001 = 1000

Then reduce to simplest form by dividing out all the prime numbers - 2, 3, 5, 7, etc.

As an example I take x = 3.141593.

[1] ... find the nearest integer n
n = 3

[2] ... subtract x' = x - n
x' = 0.141593

[3] ... calculate 1/x'
1/x' = 7.062496

[4] ... repeat steps [1] and [2] with this new value to find n'
n' = 7, x'' = 0.062496

[5] ... add 1/n' to n; simplify fraction
n = 3 + 1/7 = 22/7

[6] ... repeat these steps as often as you want
1/x'' = 16.001017
n'' = 16
x''' = 0.001017
n = 3 + 1/(7 + 1/16) = 3 + 1/(113/16) = 3 + 16/113

etc.

make your decimal overtop of a value like 10

eg: convert 0.166 to fraction:

that is 0.166/1 or 1.66/10 or 166/1000

then just simplify the fraction, 166/100 = 1 and 66/100 = 1 and 33/50

so your answer is 1 33/50
