The Aztecs thought that he was their god, Quezatcotl (that might be misspelled). When they found out that he wasn't, he was able to overcome them with his horses, and guns. They were very advanced for the people in the Americas at the time, but the "Old World" had been there done that. It was bound to happen sooner or later.

the aztecian people didn't really like the aztec rulers so they didn't really oppose cortez
and some aztecians thought cortes was a god because he rode a horse(they'd never seen a horse before) and he had blonde hair

It is true that he had superior weopons, but the short answer is that he was able to assassinate their leaders and then get them to fight each other. He was able to do that because the Aztecs thought that he was a god returning to fullfull a prophecy in their religion.

didn't he bring his sicknesses and all of them just DIED cuz they had no immune system? :( also.... they thought he was a God or Spirit and didn't kill him, allowing them to just kill em all! meanies
