Move all whole numbers to one side and complex numbers to the other. Do this by adding / subtracting to remove that number form each side. So the left side has a -4 so yo add 4 to that side to rid it of the -4 and to keep it equal you must do the same (add 4) to the other side of the = sign

So 4y-4+y = 6y+20-4y becomes 4y+y-6y+4y = 20 +4

Then add/subtract like signs together.

Now you have 3y = 24

Now divide both sides by 3 to get the y all by itself

so now y - 8

Plug it into the original question to check

4 (x8) - 4 +8 = 6(x8) +20 -4(x8) OR

32 - 4+8 = 48 +20 - 32 or

36 = 36

Done!

4y-4+y=6y+20-4y
Move all y to one side and all number to the other
4y + y -6y + 4y = 20 + 4
3y = 24
y = 8
Check
4*8 - 4 + 8 = 36
6*8 + 20 - 4*8 = 36

move all the y's to one side, all the #'s to the other

4y + y - 6y + 4y = 4 + 20

3y = 24

y = 8
