Greece is good in September because most of the Central and Northern Europeans have left and most Greeks take their summer vacations in August. So the crowd is down but it is still beach weather. October is just as good with even fewer crowds. Also when you go to Athens, you don't have to rent a car because the metro system they built before the Olympics takes you all over the main part of the city and its cheaper to take a taxi the few times if any you want to go outside the Metro limits. The metro even takes you to the intercity train station that takes you all the way to Thessaloniki in the North where you can get around relatively cheaply by taxi as well. Lots of historic sites just in Athens or throughout the country, also has the island and beach scenes, and niteclub life if your interested in that as well. Great place to visit. I went to Costa Rica in Sept 1999. It was wonderful.
Officially it's their rainy season but that means great temperatures and about 3hrs of rain each afternoon.
The hotels charge less money in the rainly season.
It's a beautiful country.
It's not a long flight from the US.
Make sure to go to Totuguero on the Atlantic coast. It's a crazy trip of bus/boat out to a remote island where the swimming pools are filled with frogs and, at midnight, you go to the beach and watch (and touch) a giant (300lb+) sea turtle lay her eggs.
