It's usually just if I have it unplugged and have it playing a video, but it just turns off. No warning or anything.

have you tried recalibrating your battery? It sounds like your battery calibration is way off. Check your manual. You'll probably need to cycle the battery a few times too. Could be it's time for a new battery.

How old is the battery? a year? two? A battery that is used often will usually last about a year or so before needing to be replaced. It could be as simple as that.

Good choice on the HP. I'm very happy with my Compaq.

The only laptop I'd buy over a compaq/hp, would be a Macintosh, and those are just too pricey for my tastes right now.

Also check your power settings in the control panel. It may be putting itself into standby mode because it thinks it is not being actively used. (though usually it will show itself in standby mode. Or if it's shutting down, it'll show windows closing out.)

This is why I dislike HP. I had a simmilar experience with an Omnibook 6000, but with music CDs. I would recomend tossing or selling the system on ebay and use the winnings to get a better system from another company like Toshiba or Acer.

If it is unplugged the power setting could be to turn off after a set period of time. Might have nothing to do with the battery level.
Check windows power saving.

Doug's probably right, it's most likely your power settings. When you are watching a video you are not usually clicking anything or moving the mouse around. Because of this, your computer thinks you have abandoned it and will go to sleep after a while. make sure you adjust the power settings and disable any screensaver or hibernate functions while watching movies.
