i`m ordering sand for a riding ring how deep should it be?

i ride pleasure and games.

I honestly advise against the sand! It holds moisture and will freeze plus you can inure your horse with it as in pulling muscles or ligaments if its to deep. I would use crushed stone dust or better yet, but its costy is the rubberized footing. It will not freeze and gives alot better traction then other thing you may put on it besides stone dust.

Sand has cripple a lot of horses.. We have a solid base with about 4'' of loose dirt and fine shaving on top.. This works fine for my wife's barrel horse, our western pleasure and reining business, cow work, and everything else.

make sure that you have a stable base first. ours i about 12 inches deep. if you can afford it and it is an indoor ring or area, then I really suggest shredded rubber. it is the most comfortable stuff i have ever ridden on and the horses love it.

I think that 6" is what we had in ours but then we had some very fine chat on the bottom of that, here is a link that talks about footings in an arena, it is some good info to read
