Fiskar's website suggested by VBeckham7 is a good place to start. They have several embossing boards, The mini boss is good for smaller cards but the Shape Boss has more templates (stencils) available. There is also Scrap Boss for 12x12 scrapbook pages. This system is easier to use than a light box as the stencil goes on top of the paper or card. and is pegged down so it can't move. You can also use the board with their shape cutter. Fiskars also do a small and a large double ended embossing tool with a comfortable rubber grip in the middle. To get the tip running smoothly rub on a wax candle as suggested above but the most common albeit unhygenic solution is to rub the tip down the side of your nose picking up a bit of skin grease.
There are a lot of brass and plastic stencils available for which you do need a light box. This is easily made with a small wooden crate. Get an electric lead with a plug on one end and a light connector on the other end. Make a hole in one side of the crate big enough to put the connector through and screw in a 100w light bulb. Put a piece of glass over the open top of the box and hey presto. You buy one if you prefer.
Heat embossing. The colour of the embossing powder is what you see so you do not need lots of different colour stamp pads. (Except if you are using clear gloss powder). Make sure pads are suitable for embossing they must be slow drying - most are pigment inks.
Another tip - pigment ink pads are available in small sizes which are much cheaper. It doesn't matter if you are using a large stamp as the pad is raised and you can (gently) tap the pad all over the surface - stamps should always be inked be face up on a flat surface not pressed down onto a pad as this can get ink onto the wrong bits.
You can heat emboss without a tool under a grill or holding it near a fire with tongs but your card is liable to singe. Hair dryers have been used but the temperature is not right and they can blow away the powder. You might borrow a heat tool to try out before you invest in one.
See if your local craft shop does workshops or demonstrations. Check for evening classes. Look for card making books at the library.

There are two types of embossing and I am assuming you mean dry embossing. This gives you a raised pattern on cards. You should be able to get the 'pen' and stencils in any craft shop very reasonably, but if you have difficulty try the web site for 'create and craft.' You may find a light box useful too. If you find you are pressing too hard and getting a wrist ache rub lightly over the area you are embossing with a wax candle to make it much easier.
If you want the 'wet' embossing for which you will need rubber stamps, versa ink pads, embossing powder and a heat tool you will also find these in craft shops or the create and craft web site too.

Michael's or a craft store.
you'll need --embossing ink (needs to be this kind) in the color you want, embossing powder to match the ink, and a stamp of the design you want. start with thicker-lined designs until you get a feel for it.
also --an embossing tool (like a hair dryer but no wind.).
It'll probably all cost about $40. but I think totally worth it. You can use it for a long, long time.
