It's common in African countries, especially among the Muslim population. Yes, it is done to control women and to remove all sexual pleasure as a deterrent to adultery. And yes, there's worse. In some cultures it is customary to sew closed a young woman's vaginal opening and open it only after marriage. Pretty grim, eh? One of the many reasons why you are glad to be born in a more enlightened culture!

they do it so the woman won't enjoy sex and yes there are worse things, this happens mostly in Arabic countrys and life in general can be VERY challenging to say the least

The practice is mostly practiced by muslims. The muslim males do whatever they can to degrade, demoralize women and take away whatever little pleasure that they can have.
