Have you checked for mold or mildew? You may want to have your house tested for chemicals. Allergic reactions can sometimes seem like depression.
Energy experts say negative "chi" can get stuck in a place. If you believe this, you may want to burn some sage or something like that.
Good luck...I hope you get to the bottom of it.

Hello there. I also live in Baton Rouge. I sometimes get melancholy when I'm in older places in New Orleans. Depression can come out for many different reasons, but perhaps you are simply associating your home with some very negative things? Maybe your fear for your child is very strong?
How interesting that you live in an old plantation here. Ever since I was a little girl, I've always wanted to take care of one. Do you do tours there?
If it's a very large place and there's not a lot of people living there, that fact alone can make for a depressing enivronment. Maybe you should invite people with good energy to come over for tea sometime, or even rent out a room to a good hearted college student.
Good luck, it seems so sad. I'm sure that if there is a spirit in your home, it's not necessarily a bad thing and I wouldn't worry too, too much.
Hey, if you ever need a property manager, let me know!

Many times, older homes and especially places where there is a lot of negative history - such as plantations in the South will be filled with negative energy, or other spirits that have not been able to find their way home.
If you realize that there is no rational reason for you to feel upset, depressed or any other emotion - then it usually is not your own but caused by something that is in your surroundings - either energy, other people or spirits. To release that negative energy you can cleanse the space yourself by burning some sage, lighting some white candles and asking that all that is not of your highest and greatest good to be released from your home now. Most spirits cannot harm the living, there is nothing to fear from them as long as you stand your ground and command that it leave your space.
There are more techniques but that is a good place to start. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Man, every time I go in my local walmart, if I go in the candy aisle, I get this horrible depressed feeling and I just want to sit on the floor and cry. No lie--it's terrible. I have to hightail it outta that store as fast as possible if I go near the candy. It's really annoying.
Give the house a good limpia (Mexican brujeria for "cleaning" in a spiritual sense.) Clean it all up, get rid of any weird junk left over from previous inhabitants, air it out. It might just be bad smells or associations or something. After that, see if anybody around the plantation knows its history or check with your real estate agent--if anything bad happened there, they have to disclose it. And check on that mold and mildew, too--that's a good point.
What matters is that *you* have a bad feeling--do what it takes to have a good feeling. It's as real as it seems to you. If you need to burn candles or sage or do a purification spell to feel better, then do what it takes--you need to feel in control of your own house, so do whatever you think is necessary to calm your nerves.

If you feel depressed for no reason, it could be hormones. Houses also have a 'mood' to them. Lots of times it's not based on the history of the house, but the amount of light that gets in and the age of the wiring. If it is a ghost, it can't harm you. Demons harm, ghosts just are.

Okay, bottom line, if it is a spirit it cannot hurt you. Address it, tell it that you and your children are living there now. Tell it you understand that it exist, but that the house and the property belong to you now, and the physical realm is for the living. Don't freak yourself out over it, and don't let it freak you out. Type "A" personalities are still type "A" after the body is gone. If there is a spirit, it probably thinks it still owns the place. Feel free to contact me if you need to.

You are a sensitive. By that you are experiencing the energy of what happened there in days past. The energy that you are feeling is probably that of slaves that were treated to the cruelty of slavery. If you are uncomfortable, seek out a Hoodoo Root Worker who can cleanse your home and send this energy along. You are in Louisiana so it shouldnt be very hard.

Give it up...You live in Baton Rouge. That alone is reason enough to be depressed when you come home.
Oh wait, that wasn't polite was it. Sorry.
Maybe your house has bad feng shui.
