Technically, 1783 when the war was over. In 1776 we only declared our independence.
BTW England never officially recognized the USA before that, though hostilities ended with the surrender at Yorktown, which would not have occurred if the French fleet not prevented an English escape. (For all you French haters out there)

We declared our independence in 1776 with the Declaration of Independence. However the British did not recognize this declaration and declared the colonies in rebellion. The Revolutionary War went on until 1781, when the British lost to the Americans at York Town. After the surrender at York Town diplomats such as Benjamin Franklin, John Jay and John Adams negotiated with the British for peace. The Second Treaty of Paris was finalized in 1783. This treaty established the United States of America as a new nation recognized by the British and other European nations.

1776 is NOT the right answer. That is when independence was declared... not won. I would say declaration is equivalent to just announcing the intention to do something, and it was only the beginning of the fight FOR independence, which was only really won after the war had ended.
The American Revolutionary War ended with the Treaty of Paris signed on Sept 3, 1783, so I would put that date as when we got American independence, or maybe even Jan. 14, 1784 when the treaty was ratified by the US Congress.
