A sentence fragment is an incomplete expression of a thought. For example, in the sentence, "Dick and Jane ran to the store," either just the subject (Dick and Jane) or the verb followed by a preposition (ran to the store) would be considered fragments because each requires the other to make a complete sentence, which by definition IS a complete thought.

I always hated dictionary-style terms myself.....

A complete sentence typically has a noun (some kind of a naming word---tree, cat, boat) or a pronoun (special type of noun, referring to people: I, you, he, she---all of these are pronouns).

A complete sentence typically ALSO has a verb (some kind of acting or "doing" word---ran, fell, jumped are all verbs).

So complete sentences have a noun (or pronoun) AND a verb.
A sentence fragment is missing the noun or verb,
