people are that way because they have a small problem with themselves that they dont like and so they feel better when they are like that

Depends what you describe as vain. If you mean putting a lot of emphasis on physical attractiveness then I ask you why should we encourage smart people? You are what you are born with, and your parents tell you to do what you do best! We use all of our skills to get through life, even looks. It would be nice if people are a bit more humble some times, but I would rather have people who are vain rather than people with no self confidence at all!
