You need to make sure you are pruning your Crepes every February. Cut off any flower stalks and/or additional sprouts just above a future bud area. This should do the trick. The crepes need to be pruned to increase flower production. Also, get some tree fertlilizer spikes. Put two of them in just after you prune. Good Luck.

First off, how old are your crepe mrytles? Secondly, if they are not newbies they may not be blooming due to lack of care. When I moved into my place 6 yrs ago, there were 5 crepe mrytles lining the front yard. They were in bad shape/neglected. After a year of care, they took off.

Tip: I use Miracle Gro plant stakes each spring. I put a couple around each tree. Also,I make sure they have adequate watering if it is a dry season. (Every so often, I water with Miracle Gro plant food in the feeder!) Also, I keep the base area cleaned out and mulched.

Mine have been blooming non stop since June. Hope this helps you.

I moved into a new house where everything including the yard was neglected, during renovation I noticed the crepe myrtles were not in bloom, During the pruning season I cut them way back to the trunk, yes I was scared they are over 50 yrs old. They came back great, I once had a camilia that would not bloom & an old timer told me to hit it with a bat on the trunk at the time it should have bloomed, I hated doing this, so I let him do it, it blooms great now! Isn't that wierd?

Crepe myrtle blooms on new branches. If you prune it before spring time, you will get a better bloom that summer. Some crepe mytle can even get two blooms in the same summer by simply cutting off the first 'spent' bloom. Once the tree becomes mature enough, pruning is not required for the yearly blossom.
