Because the slogan was "a little dab will do you" It was very greasy, and a person only needed a tiny amount. The small size jar lasted forever. Perhaps the large jar got contaminated, or liquified or somehow spoiled because it lasted so long.

I can remember both the old and the new jars. The reason that the news jars never caught on was they did have the same marketing impact as the old ones. The old ones were symbolic of the well groomed male and had sophistication of design that was lacking in the new jars.
Believe this waffle and you'll believe anything, because in the middle of the sixties brillcreeme faded into the sunset as it was considered a product for the older man and the sixties was for the young swingers supposedly. Known as 'The Swinging Sixties'.
My dear old Mum used to curse my Father because he used to smarm it on what was left of his hair to such and extent that she could not get it off of his pillow case despite boiling them in Persil Bright and Persil White for hours on end.
Caused some amount of arguments I can tell you though it was the only time they ever spoke when they were having an argument. Funny old world eh!

Things changed. Brylcreme became stigmatised. Apart from that its like all beauty products...theyre a fad for a while..not the next 12 months. The opposition to Brylcreme rightly advertised a less greasy version of hair control (not that one was needed at all) and this was called Vitalis. It was a liquid. Now you'd had your bargain Brylcreme on the shelf for months so it wasnt a waste of money to go and try Vitalis...It was brought out at the right time!

Didn't it last for an eternity that stuff, maybe it just went rancid in the larger containers by taking so long to get through, gosh did you ever smell that stuff or know anyone who did use it, it smelt horrible and every guy that used it looked like he hadn't washed his hair for months, I can remember my mom going nuts every time my father or older brother put a shirt in the wash as it was on the collars and took ages to scrub out again, if they got hot it used to run down their necks and make the shirt collars really dirty and greasy, yuk, I think it used to be pretty hard to wash out of men's hair too, thank goodness for modern gels.
