I applied for a job, and my current job doesn't know I'm looking and interviewing. What if they call?

Yes! Sometimes they will ask you if its ok if they call them and sometimes they don't. I've gotten into an uncomfortable situation because my current employer didn't know I was seeking employment elsewhere.

You can tell the HR Dept. you are applying for that you'd like to change status on "OK to contact", so that you can have a chance to discuss what the situation is with the new employer, if hired. Nothing wrong unless there was an issue with your current job. Just let the interview/hiring process flow through, then if hired, let your current job know what's up and give adequate notice before leaving.

Whenever I am interviewing for a job, when I currently have one, I always request that my current employer not be contacted.

I state,"This would cause undue stress at my current place of employement in the event I do not take the position with you." Most people should understand this and I have not had an issue.

They are not supposed to...but it all depends on how long that you have been at your current job. If you have been at your current job 4 months or longer, then probably not. Less than 4 months, they will because they would want to know how you are working out with your current company.

Usually, references won't be contacted until you are in the new job. However, higher level jobs with police or local authorities may look for references beforehand. One job I went for even wants you to bring a written reference to an interview if you are chosen.

My firm will check three references. We will not call the applicant's current employer if requested not to do so. The application usually has an area for one to indicate if they want their current employer called.

I don't think they USUALLY do. To calm your worry you'd better make sure that whoever you apply to you specify on the application that you don't want your current employer contacted. And if you have any out there already where you didn't specify that, you may as well call them and tell them to write it on your application.

If they can, they do, but usually there is a space on the application saying whether or not it is okay to call.

I suggest using a coworker you can trust as a reference or not telling anyone at all. Always include a "DNC" or 'do not call' note on your references page if you don't want them to call.

They usually require your permission before they can call.

yes, Most potential employers will call your place of buisness. I know they are only allowed to state weither you are currently working and weither they would re hire you or not.

YES they do! Never burn bridges, always give notice!!! Your current employer can't say "things about you" but when asked if you would be eligible for rehire, they have the right to say yes or no......that speaks for itself. good luck
