Nebraska has the distinction of having only a unicameral legislature at the state level; not the separate senate and house of representatives that the other states have. They also have part time legislators at the state level.
Do you feel that this would work in your state. Think about these advantages. Only one bill instead of separate bills and negotiations between the two houses. Decisions can be made more quickly.
What about your state? Would you support that type of legislature in your state?

(Please list your state and your thoughts on this issue).

Thanks!

One of the main problems with a unicameral legislature at the Federal Level and in my state (California) is the vast population disparity between urban and rural areas.

In a single house system, if you determine legislative "seats" based on population the majority of your representatives would come from the one or two largest cities in your state. This would give rural areas virtually no voice in the legislature. Conversely, if you divide seats strictly on a geographic basis, then the large populations of the big cities go under-represented.

Having two legislative houses, one based on population, one on geography, allows for balance between urban and rural interests.

Nebraska is a remarkably honest state with a high level of civic participation, so the unicam works pretty well. With the corruption of big money and other forms of bad politics in most states (such as Texas, my home), I like the protection of a Bi-cameral legislature.

Anything that reduces the size of the government is always a good thing.
