It has been almost a year and many types of aid have been given those who lost everything in katrina. They have gotten free rent , electric, etc and most of them got a debit card which some used for what they needed, many abused. I know this because I worked at the mall at that time and witnessed them buying jewelry and video games and stuff. I lost everything I had last year about the same time too, due to other circumstances. No one gave me anything. I had to pay to live at the motel till I found an apartment and I do without many things that I cannot afford including air conditioning in the hot sourthern climate I live in while the evacuees run their air conditioners. We have given them a helping hand but isn't it time for them to get up and take care of themselves. We need to save our funds for when the next huricane disaster occurs.

to the person who said that they are not online complaining about things like i am, you may not be but believe me I live in Houston and its all I hear day after day on the news. Yesterday they were complained about their power being cut off and being without airconditioning, well I live everyday without airconditioning in an upstairs apartment facing south. I am not referring to those people like yourself that is trying to help themselves, I am refering to those who abuse the system.

Yeah, it is about time. Shut off their power and kick their sorry asses out of their rent free apartments unless they are willing to start pay for it themselves. (yeah right)
Bad things happen to people all the time, people lose everything in fires, there was Hurricane Rita shortly after Katrina, etc. It is funny how those people can pick up the pieces and start over but these poor "victims" are having everything handed to them a year later.

So you are from Texas I take it? You have only seen a tiny portion of the whole as regards to Katrina. I think you need to worry about your business and let other people worry about theirs. Here in Gulfport, Mississippi there is a housing shortage due to Katrina. If the people who were made homeless didn't have their FEMA camper then they would be on the street. Insurance has refused to pay people for their loses when they held full insurance. People don't have a job that will pay enough to live on here. It is still a mess. So don't judge everybody affected by Katrina as a worthless parasite. That is a small percentage of the people.
Grow up and open your eyes. New Orleans is struggling too and needs help. Those people living there are trying hard, just like we are. We are not on line complaining about how tough our lives are like you just did.

You had different circumstances, so you can not begin to put yourself in their shoes. In every situation there are going to be rotten people taking advantage. But for every one rotten person, there are hundreds more who need the help and are using it responsibly. You don't know the half of what these people are going through. If you were a Katrina victim and they pulled all support away from you right now, you'd be up here complaining about that. What ever your circumstances, they don't compare to a National Disaster. Get over yourself. You as a single person, are not near as important as thousands of honest hard working people trying to put their lives back together.

Let's be specific, by katrina evacuees you mean New Orleans residents. Most damage in the other states has been repaired, and people are moving on. And why would you expect them to move on? Since the start they have expected everything to be done by the government. They expected the government to evacuate their lazy asses, they expect the government to pay for the cleanup, and they expect the government to give them a place to live until it's done. Well, I'd say between the government and private donations, they have gotten plenty to survive, and they still want more. This isn't true of all people of course, but of many. I feel bad for Houston, they are suffering a major crime hike since Katrina, which has been attributed to the evacuees. But you're right, it's time to go home.

Totally! we can't keep sustaining people for years, sure it was terrible but like all disasters we have to move on with what the future holds, and they have to rebuild their city with all the aid they've been given. anyways, there will surely be more katrina-like disasters, thats why i live 1 mile above sea level. :)

Yes, it is, but a lot of them seem to want a hand out and want the government to take care of them.

Couldn't agree with you more! Unfortunately the cities that still have "problem children" aren't going anywhere. Most stand up citizens have moved on. The drug addicts, welfare cases etc.are not going anywhere.

I agree they should get help but if they are going to spend it on unecessary things they need to be put in check. I hope you are able to rebuild your life.
