Has anyone noticed that the bay bridge and the san mateo bridge are closed labor day weekend? is the golden gate and dumbarton closed too? HOw is this possible we need those bridges to travel. DO u think theres some government conspiracy that something is going to happen to the bay area that weekend and they r trapping us all in so we can die?

The only bridge closure will be the lower level of the SF-Oakland Bay bridge.
The transportation agency is doing trying to finish the seismic retrofit work without closing the lower deck on yet another weekend. The Labor Day weekend gives the workers an extra day to do the work.
No other bridges in the Bay area will be affected during Labor Day weekend
Also, BART will provide 24 hour service

Closure of the bridge is part of the seismic safety project "retrofit-by-replacement" for the Bay Bridge. Only the East-bound (lower level, going to Berkeley/Oakland) part of the bridge will be closed. The West-bound (upper level, going to San Francisco) will be open.

The reason for Labor Day Weekend is that the demolishing of more than 1000 feet of the upper deck will require that this phase be completed in three days, instead of using a second weekend closure. CalTrans has researched that Sat and Sun traffic volumes on Labor Day weekend are "typically" lower than on other weekends. Also, other weekends in Sept and Oct have major public events planned.

If you are still interested in coming to San Francisco, you can cross over via the Bay Bridge. However, you will have to find alternate routes to go back. If you live in Oakland/Berkeley (or south of this area), you can cross the San Mateo Bridge. If you live north if this area, you can cross the Golden Gate Bridge and the Richmond/San Rafael bridge.

Have fun in the City!

They are NOT closed due to bomb threats. They are closed because there is a new bridge being built to replace the Bay Bridge and the current bridge is always being retrofitted to be earthquake safe. Anyone remember the 1989 earthquake??? This issue has been going on for 16+ years. Not crossing the bridge for one weekend (versus 16 years) only a minor inconvenience.

Only the one set of lanes (either top or bottom) on the SF Bay Bridge are going to be closed. Every other bridge will be open as usual. CalTrans will be completing their offramp project on the Bay Bridge and am not sure what their mentality of completing it on Labor Day weekend is. It will definitely affect 99% of the public's travel plans.

The Bay Bridge is closed labor day weekend because of the construction. The others are open.

It's earthquake retrofit and they are only closing the upper deck of the Bay Bridge. BART will be running 24 house so I don't think anyone would die.

Their answer is that they can get the same work done in one 3 day weekend as compared to 2 regular weekends. This saves one day of closure. Hope that helps you.

Thanks for reminding me about this. I'm driving down to LA on Sat. morning of the long weekend. Looks like I'll take 101 South instead of I-5.

No, actually it is because there have been bomb threats on the bridges. GO AROUND. Yeah, it takes longer, but you CAN get out of town without using them.
