I agree that lately presidents have obtained too much power and that the executive branch has been gaining power since Washington.
But you do need a president to set the tone of the country.
The president's authority can go both ways. It can either be used as a powerful tool to accomplish incredible feets such as landing on the moon or wiping out smallpox. But as we currently see it, the president"s power can also and is being serverly misused.
Most of our government doesn't include the president. But you still need a figurehead to look up to, a single person with the power to enforce the laws (By the constitution this is the only job of the president), and establish continuity and order in our very complex government.
With out the president, all you would basically have left is congress. Which as you can see is just as retarded, incompetent, and corrupted as the bush administration itself.
I truly do hope to see a day when presidents will not seem to want too much power and our national government can run seamlessly with a great leader in check as our founding fathers intended it to be.

Because that is stated in our Constitution. From grade school, we have been taught that there are three branches in our governmental system: Executive, Legislative and Judicial. Executive power lies in the President of the United States who is elected by the people.

We could do just as well with a parliamentary system.
But the basic split is between those who write the laws, those who interpret the laws and determine what's valid, and those who enforce the law.
As long as those functions are keep sufficiently distinct to ensure checks and balances, the details are less important than the overall success of the process.

without the president you don't have a three branch system of "checks and balances" aka vetoes. Although this pres isn't cool, his position is necessary.
