I have a 4 month old guinea pig, and he is scared out of his mind to leave his shelter. He'll walk out, take a bite of food, and run back in hiding. He comes and runs around our basment once ever 1 or 2 weeks, but other than that, he is hiding, Eating and hiding, and he is starting to get overweight. If i could show him there is nothing to be scared off, maybe he would come out of his shelter more............
but how do i do it???

Guinea pigs are very nervous animals in general - so in order to stop this problem, handling is key. You don't have to bug them all day, but make a point of picking him up and moving him around a lot. Eventually, he'll get use to you and not feel quite as frightened. Noise also bothers animals, so when you go and get him, don't scare him, but don't sneak up on him. Talk to him - it sounds weird, but it will listen...sort of. Good luck!

i used to have a guinea pig like that. The best you can do is to handle them as often as possible. If its shelter is one of those castles lift it up slowly and then grab the pig. It may squeal a little but trust me, it works! :)

first of all put down the knife. just kidding. guinea pigs dont react well to fast motion, try sitting with him and make slow movements till he gets used to you. a little every day.

you have to slowly, slowly reach down, let him smell your hand, pick him up, and hold him close to your chest. Just keep on doing this and in a couple of days, he (or she) should get used to you. But no sudden movements, those teeth hurt bad when they bite you.

You have to start holding him. Thats the only way they'll get use to you. When I first got my hamster she would bite when ever I would pick her up. But after I started holding her more often she got use to me. And now she is very outgoing.

I would coax him out of his cage and feed him a treat and also give him two daily feedings instead of one big bowl. And, talk to an expert of his weight. Good Luck!!

You need to handle him , even if you put gloves on . Be sweet to him try feeding him his favorite treat. Let him smell you, you need to work with him or he will always be wild. Good Luck!
