this is how it reads int he book "I am sure I heard a yell. Perhaps he keeps a mad wife shut up there (attic). Yes I've thought of that. "Or perhaps he is a coiner"

Yes - I agree - it means a counterfeiter of coins. British slang - someone who makes things up. That's the context in which it was used.

perhaps you could add additional details and write the sentence it was in? as it stands, to coin something is to make it into a fad, or introduce it into common usage.

"He coined the phrase, 'in a pickle'."

what a great book, one of my favorites. i don't remember the context of the word, but dictionary.com says:

a piece of metal stamped and issued by the authority of a government for use as money.
