I had an 89 Civic, Here is most likely the issue, There was a recall on it about the turn of the century,,really.....There is a relay that is located at drivers side up towards the front....For some stupid reason Honda installed these upside down causing water to get into them. Yours for some reason never got fixed. I would for sure look there before anything else..

Hondas from this time frame have been known to have tempermental fuel pumps so that's a definite possiblility. A pressure test on the fuel pump will tell you what you need to know. It's possible that there's a bad electrical connection to the fuel pump but I lean towards the pump itself. I'd check the fuel filter as well; a partly plugged filter can cause these same symptoms. You may also have some fouled injectors (although they would tend to cause it to run rough rather than sputter and die). My knee-jerk reaction is that the pump's failing and occasionally not generating enough fuel pressure to keep the car running. I'd have it and the rest of the fuel delivery system checked out.

Hope this helped.

Problems with a honda? I thought hondas never had any problems ever?

Seriously, fuel pumps can go out and it may be just that problem.BTW a new fuel pump may cost $150-$500 Also have them replace the fuel filter (which should only cost like $15).

I had a similar problem with an 85 Cavalier. We kept checking the fuel pump, but it was always OK. It ended up being the distributor coil. It used to stall for no reason on the highway, then not start for a while. Try calling the Car Talk guys. They are on NPR at 10 AM eastern on Saturdays.

its very rare that a fuel pump gradually goes out...they usually work or don't work...the best thing to do is start with you maintenance items that have not been done recently..it also could be the fuel pump relay...

with out hearing it it is hard to really diagnose it
