I think it is hormones and just that stage of life. I used to be like that and like probably 90% of them, I grew out of it. A teenagers brain is still growing to a degree and as they become more aware of things they tend to suffer from excessive idealism. This can become depressing when they think the solution to everything in the world is so simple and noone is doing anything about.

I'm depressed and Goth but I didn't become goth because I'm depressed I just don't like other clothes. I'm been depressed since 5th grade if I changed to Goth because I was depressed I would have changed then...

for some my guess is it is simply trying to rebel, nonconformity. for others, perhaps they feel outcasted by society, for being different in the first place. and for others, perhaps a tragedy in the family, or something traumatizing happens in their life, they feel they cannot connect with the majority of society, and they become as you put it, goths and wear all black.

Its a scene thing usually, they pretend not to be interested in fashion but will meticulously apply black eyeliner. Its about image i've found and definitely about image in my own experience. Once someone does it, then all want to. Its how kids work.

Obviously, there are geniune people out there, but I find most of them are fake.

I was never normal/preppy, it was more of a matter of my mom becoming progressively more flexible with my choices in clothing.

i don't think they are necessarily depressed, but i believe most just do it for attention. i've noticed most goths try to be idiots and strive for attention. i'm in hs and i'm pretty sure that's how it is.
