having a chronic cough and congestion is not a normal situation. there is a cause for both. first thing to do is see a physician to determine the cause. causes could be postnasal drip down the back of yr throat--maybe caused by allergies; they could be caused by a chronic lung disease such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, or even the big C; or there could be excess fluid in the lungs caused by heart disease. now these are not to frighten you. but, a chronic cough and congestion should be examined by a doctor. if you are a smoking anything, i suggest you quit. more than likely you simply have acquired a new allergy. allergens are at an all time high.

Depending on what the reason is, is it allergic or from a cold (=infection) or from dust you are breathing in at work or so?

You need to find out the reason and treat it from there.
If it is an infection usually it goes away on it's own. You can support the healing with natural remedies as using head steam baths, hot tea with honey, Eucalyptus and so on.

If it is allergic then the best is to remove the cause...which is difficult. Is it animal hair? You may need to get rid of animal. Is it certain plants? You need to stay away from them. And so on. Or - your would need start taking drugs to fight the symptoms. But that's not a good solution.

If it is dust or other contamination - protect yourself with breathing mask, face mask and so on. Or try to stay away from it, in worst case it may mean to change job.

You could try an essential oil blend of peppermint, eucalyptus and tea tree. Mix equal amounts of each and rub over your chest twice a day. If your skin is sensitive, you can dilute the oils with unscented massage oil or olive oil. If you don't want to put it on your chest (date, work, or whatever), you could also apply them to the bottom of your feet. Essential oils applied to the feet reach every organ in the body in 20 minutes. (cool, huh?)
