Do the social science. You can always do counselling after, you would have lost nothing, but gained a great deal.

Go for the degree... you could leave after a year with 12 months study experience. Counseling these days can be done in evening classes, and you won't gain much from it. When you think about it, counselling is really a replacement for having a good chat to a good friend. Everyone you meet (clients) will have problems. I know this is the case with a lot of jobs but at least with social science your options are a bit more open. If you really don't know what you want to study, why not defer for a year and do a bit of voluntary work so you know which area you want to work in...Once you get out there you may find you want to study for a Dip.SW, or work in probation, or maybe teaching....Just give yourself a year. The qualifications are yours to enjoy - further ed isn't doing you a favour. Good luck - be happy!

Counselling courses tend to ask for people with a certain amount of life experience, and a lot of them have a lower age limit of 25. This is because counselling is best suited for people with more life experience, it is quite challenging and you really need to know who you are first.

I would go for the Social Science degree, it will lead on to interesting careers and you can always do counselling later in life.

Well there's no point doin something if you really don't want to, trust me i've been there! you could try social science and then apply for a transfer to counselling during the year if you really hate it!! or you could take the year out, get a job, earn loads of money for next year and then apply for counselling next year! either way, good luck with it!!!

Take a gap year- if you dislike social science, you'll just end up slacking off and getting lower grades, or transferring courses. Use the time to save up some cash- a definite advantage in your first year (bills/debts being a major hassle for most students).

Will social science help you in counseling? If you are in the school and an opening comes then transfer It is easier if you are in then to get in.
