The best one for carpets is an upright with beater bar adjustment.

Aggressive advertising will put some names in your mind, but it's just advertising.

many are overpriced and all basically do the same thing, but all vacuums suck.

I have bought many vacumn cleaners in my life....the highly priced Kirbys and Electrolux, etc are wonderful but so pricey and hard to move around. Last yeat I went to KMart and bought a lightweight Hoover run-around for 89.00...........it has the attachments, works great....but the filters which I changed about every 3 months cost 13.00 apiece.......no bags are involved and you just empty it after use and I AM A HAPPY CAMPER...just pay for the filters and enjoy a light weight easy to maneuver small vacumn.

Dyson no more searching for hoover bags, and the suction power is excellent, no more half hoovered carpets and flooring

I LOVE MY EUREKA upright. It's bag less (thank goodness because I need to empty the cup halfway through the whole house) it works amazing! It even has attachments.

Durability Basic Hoover up right, and they are easy to use. If you get one without bags that harder to use, but beats hassle of buying bags,

I've got a dyson. That thing is absolutely fantastic. There is no amount of dog fur it can't handle.
