Here is what I did... I went to google.com, typed in "free classroom kits" and then went to those links. I think I signed up for about 10 and then quit for the night. I will have quite a variety of things...from teachtolerance.com I have a Rosa Parks video and lessons, from an environmental group I have a packet of materials on being eco-friendly. Have fun with it, you never know when you need to add something free to the classroom!

It is a little known secret that Staples and Office Max will give away things that they are discontinuing or "damaged" things. Contact a local store and ask if they have anything.
I buy most everything for my classroom and do not know of many places that you can get things unless perhaps you apply for a grant. Then you can get supplies for specific projects.

Why do teachers need to buy things for the classroom? Why doesn't the school system buy them?

I would do a nice letter up and solicit donations for your school from big box retailers.
