Here's a real good book on the subject. It's called "The Self-Publishing Manual, How to Write, Print and Sell Your Own Book" by Dan Poynter.

It's almost impossible to make a profit off a self-published book. You need to find a literary agent who believes in your work and is willing to argue its merits to publishers.
