The greater the ignorance the greater the dogmatism.
Sir William Osler (1849 - 1919)
To blaspheme against Allah for the actions of extremists is the same as blaspheming Jehovah or Jesus for the actions of the Davidians or Pat Robertson's babble.
The religions are, at heart, more similar than most faithful are comfortable with, but that is not my point here.
My point is that the Muslim faith, like the Christian faith, is at its most basic, a 'good' religion, encouraging good works and love of family. However, like most faiths, the 'Word' can be twisted and perverted by extremists, and acts of great evil can be done in the name of the religion, like the Crusades, the Inquisition, and Islamic Jihad.
To denounce Allah or Mohammed for the acts of terrorists is the same as denouncing Jesus or Jehovah for the acts of the Inquisitors at the Witch Hunts. It is not the fault of either the deity or the mainstream religion what a group of relic-waving zealots perpetrate in the name of said religion, it is the fault of the people who lump others in with them through ignorance and fear and use that to perpetrate even greater wrongs.
for the record: I grew up Christian, and have attended Lutheran, Methodist, Baptist, Pentacostal, Mormon, and Catholic services at various times and for varying durations. I read too much to consider myself a follower of any of those dogmas on faith alone. I have no affiliation with the Muslim faith, but at least I have read about it, spoken with Muslims, and understand what I'm talking about before shooting off my mouth. I have decided not to be Buddhist, because I love eating animals too much to stop voluntarily. I have the greatest respect and admiration for the Jews, because they of all religions, have the least to feel guilty about.

The word you're probably looking for is "idol", or possibly "Baal". I'd say idol first. Baal is an example.
