She was trying to say that despite coming from an impoverished background, there's no reason at all why you can't reach for the stars. Believe in yourself, work hard, and you can do anything. You're as good as the rest of them.
Thats my interpretation, great question :)

That's very good did you write that?
She was trying to say that she loved you and that you don't need money or material things in order to get by in the world.

life is hard and not easy. "keep your eyes on the star" to "survive" and it showed the singer "the way". The singer has found success now....thats what she was trying to say...get it?

i guess she was trying to keep them optamistic, to look up, to dream ...
maybe she was stressing on the importance of education? (personally i believe in: i was born intelligent but education ruined me!)
"Believe in yourself & that you have a purpose in life - don't blow it!"
The more i think about it - the more ideas i get and it's there but i just can't put my finger on it ... Great Question.

She said son there’ll be times when the tides are high
And the boat may be rocky, you can cry
Just never give up, you can never give up.
