Area is like how many feet there are in a room. Volume is like how much stuff is in it. Say you have a glass of water that is 6 inches around...that is the area, the amount of water inside the glass is the volume.

Both area and volume require a measurement of length and width. With volume, depth is added which transforms an object from being measured in two dimensions (and measured as area) to three dimensions (and measured as volume).
A square is a flat surface. You measure its area, because it has no depth.
A cube is a solid object. You measure its volume, because it has depth.

If you paint a wall in a room, you've covered its area. If you fill the whole room with paint, so you could swim in it, that's volume.
