The funny part is that traditional companies value the married employees with a family more because it confers some sort of responsibility that single employees don't have.

I have a kid and I don't go home early, but I don't stay late, either. Frankly, my family is more important than my job. I can always get another job, but I can't replace seeing my daughter grow up. Is someone forcing you to stay late and work because you don't have kids? If not, get over it! Having a family is part of life. If you are expected to stay late because you don't have a family, sounds like you would have some sort of discrimination suit going for you there.

Question for you - Would you rather be an 'A' employee and a 'B' parent, or a 'B' employee and an 'A' parent?
Once you have your priorities in order, at most firms the reward for working harder is... more work. The hardest worker seldom gets the promotion or goes into management. It't generally the best manager who climbs the ladder, and that frequently has little to do with logging hours.

Well my husband who has 2 kids was called in to work Boxing Day 2 years ago, and he went in as well, leaving 2 crying children behind.
Maybe if you spent less time moaning about other people, you'd look around and find yourself a life. No-one ever thought on their deathbed 'I wish I'd spent more time at the office.'

Being the closed mouth puppet isn't always what it's cracked up to be. Sometimes a personal dislike for people overshadows all the good you do, and that is better know as BIAS! So, be the good guy, and stay for others, take care of crap jobs no one else is willing to do, but keep a limit on it. Don't burn yourself out out of loyalty that won't be reciprocated! :)

Believe me, it's not because we want to.
the responsibility of a parent isn't just seeing that they do their homework or have a good breakfast. Children learn most by example. If they see their parent, or parents, following a regiment conducive to getting up daily, going off to work then returning home to face the responsibilities of parenting they themselves are more likly to grow into responsible adults. And believe me,...they can wear you out!

Family comes first regardless, specially your kids. Anyone who doesn't see it that way must not have children or care less.
