I live in California where it is legal to both ride in the carpool lane alone and also legal to share a lane with a car. I see motorcycles riding down the the carpool lane right on the double yellow line or even between two double yellow lines passing everyone. Anyone know if this is legal too?

in California, you cannot cross the double yellow from the traffic side of the car pool lane - you have to wait for the break in the line to merge into the car pool lane - once you are in the car pool lane, you can exit the lane even through the solid line because there is a white line on the inside which allows you to exit the lane whenever it is safe - "white lining" or riding on the double yellow is not technically legal but I have been riding motorcycles since I was 14 and I have NEVER been pulled over for it - if you are ever pulled over for it, tell the officer that you thought you were going to get cut off, you were in danger, etc and they will understand, especially a motorcycle officer - good luck

I'm a CA rider as well, and I don't know about this question specifically. I believe it's ok, as long as you don't cross back and forth across the double yellow. Safety first, however, and if you're getting crowded out of your lane, you gotta do whatever is safe......if a cop pulls you over, most of them will understand that your safety is the primary concern.

Besides, if a cop sees you, they won't be able to catch you UNLESS they are a motorcycle cop, and motorcycle cops are cool to riders!

Keep safe!

No idea about the CA rules, but in india you can share your lane with any vehicle.
Well you also need to carry a lens to search for the yellow lane here !

i can't help you with CA law, but in AZ we can ride in the carpool lane solo. and you must be within the lane lines, you can not ride the lines, and we are not aloud to share lanes with cars either.

It is never legal to ride on or cross a double yellow line.

Sharing a lane with an experienced motorcyclist with whom you have ridden before and can trust is one thing. "Sharing" a lane with a cager is just plain stupid!

yes it is illegal to ride inbetween a double yellow, but it is very hard for a cop to pull you over, unless the cop is also on a bike
