the home and well are new as of fall 2005. I don't have details on the well. This odor just started a day or two ago. It smells like dirt...not sulfur...just plain dirt. The water looks fairly clean in small amounts.

You can take it to a water testing site and they can tell you whats in it. But it might just be minerals which would be good for you.

You can try sanitizing it. There's directions on the web but it's basically pooring bleach in the well. Run each faucet until you smell the bleach, do not use water for 6-12 hours. Open all faucetts and run until you no longer smell bleach.

Since you have well water, you've probably got a water filtration system somewhere in the house. You probably need to change the filters, as they collect sediment to keep it out of the water you drink. I don't know what kind you've got, so you'll have to figure out what kind/size filters you need, but that sounds like the problem. We have to change ours every 3 months.
