Can they make the car make a sort-of chug when you slow down?

The motor mount(s) support the engine on the vehicles' frame. If one is broken, it can cause your car to vibrate severely in either drive or reverse when accelerating. A broken mount normally shouldn't cause the engine to stall, however, if the broken mount has allowed the engine to move excessively, it IS possible there may be a pinched wire or broken vacuum hose that could cause the car to stall. But the mount should be replaced ASAP, before it causes drive-line damage. HTH, Good Luck!

Motor mounts are rubber, sometimes fluid filled pieces that attach your motor to your chassis (frame, unibody) It being made out of rubber or fluid filled rubber, it absords shock so your car does not vibrate while the engine is running.... it also keeps torque against the frame low, otherwise if it were merely bolted in place, the bolts would snap when you took off hard and that would not be good.... If your car is stalling, it prob is not the motor mounts... if oned breaks, your engine would rock more than normal and you would feel a "jolt" when you pressed the accelerator down again after you came down a hill, in otherwords, went from a period of not using your engine just letting it coast to a period of having to use your engine again to say, pull a hill. You might would hear a "popping" when pressing your accelerator and letting of while your engine is running in park or neutral... have some rev your engine up and down and watch your engine.... if it moves side to side or back and forth a few inches, this is prob your trouble. A engine mount would be a split second feel in driving, a "stall" would be from a few seconds of decreased or no performance, so i doubt a motor mount is your prob.

I think you mean Engine Mounts ?

I had a car that had a broken LHS engine mount that would stall the motor if you revved it hard ( Engine Jumps up - Distributor Hits Bonnet and then Dislodges the cap )

What you are describing doesn't sound like an Engine mount problem though !

Motor mounts are what actually attach you motor to the frame of your automobile and hold it in place. No it will not make your car stall. It will however allow you engine to shake, vibrate, and move around under the hood if one of the mounts break or come loose. It should be fixed to be safe.

The motor mounts serve two purposes, they hold engine in place and dampen engine vibrations. A bad mount would not make your car stall.

A motor mount holds the engine in place. A bad one can make your engine fall out. It has nothing to do with the actual running of the engine.

They hold your motor in your car. If you have a bad one, the motor can make the hole car shake. I don't think they would cause your car to stall.
