Find the common denominator.

The sure fire way is to multiply the two denominators together to come up with a denominator that has to be common to both.

You can multiply any number by 1 without changing its value.

Any fraction that has the same number in the numerator and denominator equals 1.

So:

(1/6) * (8/8) + 12 (48/48) - (3/8) ( 6/6) =

8/48 + 576/48 - 18/48 =

566/48 = 283/24

If you know your multiplication facts and can see a lower common denominator, do so (it makes the numbers smaller and easier to deal with). For example:

I know my products of 6 are: 6 12 18 24

And 8 are: 8 16 24

Which gets me an easier fraction to work with. I get:

(1/6) ( 4/4) + (12/1) (24/24) - (3/8) (3/3) =

4/24 + 288/24 - 9/24 = 283/24

That saved me only one step at the end and the numbers weren't that much easier to deal with, but recognizing the lower common factors almost always saves you something in effort.

Edit: When I think about it, I think my kid's school did it another way that also works. Factor each denominator.

1/6 = 1/(2 * 3)
3/8 = 3/(2 * 2 * 2)
1 will work with anything

Since there's a 2 already duplicated in both fractions, the 1/6 only has to be multiplied by (2*2)/(2*2).

Likewise, since one of the 2's are duplicated, the 3/8 is multiplied by 3/3.

If you had 1/6 + 5/12 + 5/18, you'd have:

1/(2 * 3) + 5/(2 * 2 * 3) + 5/(2 * 3 * 3)

You have a 2 and 3 common to all three fractions, so your common denominator will just bring over one 2 and one 3. That still leaves and extra 2 from the second fraction and an extra 3 from the third fraction, making your common denominator = 2 * 3 * 2 * 3

When setting all of your fractions to common denominators, the first fraction already has a 2 and a 3, so you only need to multiply it by (2 * 3)/(2 * 3).

The second has two 2's and a 3, so you still have one 3 left. The second fraction is multiplied by 3/3.

The third has two 3's and a 2. That still leaves a 2, so the third fraction is multiplied by 2/2.

The third way works and is orderly and who knows - it may be the way I first learned it. It's just so much easier if you can almost instinctively see the common denominator by knowing your multiplication table.

- first try and find the lowest common denominator (LCD) of 1/6 , 12 , and -3/8
- since the denominator is 1 for any integer thats not a fraction (for example: 12 = 12/1) ; the denominators are 6 , 1 , 8
- LCD is 24
- now multiply each fraction by whatever number to make that denominator 24
- 1/6 multiply by 4 to get 4/24
12/1 x 24 to get 264/24
-3/8 x 3 to get -9/24
- so now the equation should look like this: 4/24 + 264/24 - 9/24
- this equals 259/24

First rewrite the 12 to make things easier as 12/1

then find a common denom for all three fractions

1/6, 12/1, -3/8 what number is divisable by 6, 1, and 8? 24

Now apply the new denomination

1/6 (with new denom of 24) = 4/24
12/1 (with new denom of 24 = 288/24
-3/8 (with new denom of 24) = -9/24

Now add the new fractions

4/24 + 288/24 + -9/24 =
288/24 or 11.8

You need to get a common denominator. 6 and 8 have common ??? of 24. So, 1/6 = 4/24 and (-3/8) = 9/24
12 = (12*24)/24.

So, (4/24) + [(12*24)/24] + (-9/24) =
[(12*24) + 4 - 9]/24 ----combine over common denominator
12*24 = 288
288 +4-9 = 292-9 = 283
283/24 = 11 and 19/24 (11*24 = 264) 283-264 is 19

Hope this helps and sorry if it's hard to figure out my reasoning.

1/6 - 3/8 + 12 = -5/12 + 12 = -283/24

1/6 + 12 + (-3/8) = 1/6 + 12 - 3/8
= (1/6-3/8) + 12
= ((8-18)/48) + 12
= -10/48 + 12
= (-10 + 576)/48
= 566/48
= 11.79166

well get the denominators out! you can either find a common denominator (24), or multiply everything by 6 AND 8 whatever is easiest...

ok i guess i can't do what i had earlier cuz there's equation. =T

so make the common denominator 24

4/24 + 288/24 + (-9/24) = 283/24
