I hate when I'm writing an email and I need to use one of them and I can't tell which one. I use MS Outlook and when I use the look up- the definitions seem the same. Help.

"affect" is an action -- the wind affected my golf ball
"effect" is a thing, like "sound" or "blue" or "hot" -- with the wind's effect, my ball flew off course.

remember it like this:
- movies have "special effects" which are things that make the movie exciting.

affect is kind of like the action..like "the blow affected me"

effect is like the result of the action..like"the blow was quite an effect."
