Iran is doing this as a show for the world, to prove how powerful they are. They set up the nuclear program knowing they would get a world-wide reaction. Now they are reveling in the attention.
They made a proposal to the UN knowing that it would be rejected. They can now say they were being reasonable by the UN is out of control trying to dictate to a sovereign nation how to run the program.
There is no reason for a peaceful nuclear program to enrich uranium or operate breeder reactors.

Iran wants the bomb because all of it's potential enemies have nukes. In the north there is turkey protected by a nuclear NATO. In the east is nuclear Pakistan. In the west is nuclear Israel and USA . In the south is US carrier forces and several nuclear navies. So it's in there strategic interest to get the bomb and deal with everyone on equal level nothing gets you respect like nuclear weapons.

Iran wants to take over the Middle East and destroy Israel. As far as they are concerned, lacking nuclear weapons is the only thing stopping them. They know if they had an aresenal of nukes like China does, that the U. S. would be much more hesitant to to mess with them and tell them what they can or cannot do. Iran will never get nuclear weapons though because Israel and the U. S. will not allow it.

I think it's White House propaganda for the most part. Iran has every reason for wanting to develop nuclear weapons: like most nations, they see the bully George Bush as head of the world's newest 'evil empire' - the United States of America.
Iran knows the U.S.A. wants all its OIL, and have witnessed Bush's illegal and unconstitutional invasion of Iraq solely for that purpose.
PREDICTION: There will be NO TROOP WITHDRAWALS from Iraq until Dick Cheney has a rock-solid, ironclad arrangements to take all of Iraq's OIL (in full cooperation of the new Iraqi government which he helped install).
PREDICTION: As soon as Bush can figure out a plausible reason for invading Iran, he'll do so (knowing that "weapons of mass destruction" won't fool most Americans again). And, he'll do so before the end of 2007 for the very same reason he illegally invaded Iraq: OIL.
Cheney and Bush are both oilmen. They both a committed to making their buddies at Exxon-Mobil richer and richer and richer. Why else do you think they were installed in the Oval Office? -RKO-

It's not just the White House who's saying this. The UK also maintains that is the case, and more importantly so do France, Germany, and Russia. The last three are certainly beholden to the current US President, so you can't dismiss their concerns by saying the White House is making it up.

You know damn good n' well that Iran is striving for it's own nukes. It's not just the White House that thinks so, it's the whole UN that thinks so.

Of course they want the bomb. As soon as they get it, they will use it to kill the 'infidels' (people who believe differently then them). If the want the bomb so bad we should send them one of ours via a titan missile to Tehran. Iran is a useless country full of idiots who believe and are brainwashed into a terrible religion.

why should we believe them? Bush & co. lied to us before about Iraq, Katrina, illegal wire taps (and God knows what else) and who's to say they aren't lieing now?
How can we trust our government when it's run by people of so little character?
