In general racism is thought by most people to be the prejudice against people of another color and while that is true, it is much more than such a determination. It has always been a perspective of Us verses Them. Us being those closest to ourselves and Them being anyone not close. Feuds among clans (such as those in the American Southern Mountains or those within the Scottish Highlands. So to with Tribal warfare, such among the various tribes of the American plains or among the various tribes of Africa. The warfare between the City States of Ancient Greece would also meet this Us verses Them attitude.

In the sixties and seventies when many of us protested in marches and carried signs the hope was that in our life time it would disappear. After years of working in many community activities meant to bring people together, I no longer believe such will happen. While it has been reduced significantly in government, in the community at large it appears to have gotten worse. Maybe it would be better to put it that, as civility and responsibility for one’s acts have dropped in our society, Us verses Them has become stronger in many areas of society. The simple act of teaching the young, personal responsibility and how to be civil and the expecting them to act in such manners have become politically incorrect. As long as that is the rule, then Us verses Them will exist.

While the article cited is sickening, it is not surprising to me. It is also not surprising that other acts of such apparent prejudice are initiated by "all" racisl and cultural groups.

Unfortunately there will probably always be a bunch of racist pinheads running around. It won't go away until we are all the same color and religion...which doesn't look likely and if it did occur it will be because someone was more powerful than the others which isn't a good thing either. When people realize that we are all the same color inside, then there will be a change. Unlikely, but a nice thought. If adults would look at small children they could learn a lot. Most little children are color blind...inless someone has poisioned their minds.

I think so. Its far better now than it used to be. There's still a ways to go, but as with all things that work against contributing to the emphasizing of what we all have in common, racism will not - in the long run - surivive.

Optimistic? Maybe. But what would people who lived 150 years ago have believed about races, and what would they think if they saw all the ways things have changed since then.

Why should it be? Get a group for 100 white or 100 black guys together for 1 month, and they will break into groups and start hating each other. Such is the nature of a MAN.

Wow, I'm amazed at how optimistic and positive everyone else!! Absolutely shocking... not! Well, you know what? I'm going to be the first to say "yes". Why? Because it may take a long time, but it WILL end. People WILL learn and evolve eventually. So there-- end of story! Period.

Racism has been around for thousands of years, believe me i would love for it to be done with , i have been threw hell all of my life for being of mix color (mother white and father black).i never was able to meet my grandparents on either side of the family because of racial issues. But I'm here by the Grace of god and i will not let any one person take my identity from me, so we have to learn that there will always be uneducated people out there waiting and more than willing to hate you because of the color of your skin, but you just have to remember that we all come from one man and his name was ADAM.......
