I'm just now starting to sell books on ebay for a friend with tons of art books on his hands.... The first thing you look for is the publishing date in the library of congress information around the middle of the page. That should be found just above the ISBN number. Below that, there should be "Published in (year) by such & such publishers," and as far as I know, if you do not see a string of numbers across the bottom of that page (like '1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10', which would indicate what printing a book was produced in.) If you see a string of numbers like that, it is definitely not a first edition. Also, if you see it indicates another publisher in any year other than that initial year found above the ISBN number, that's also a tip-off that it's not a first edition. Hope this helps.....

what kind of book? My algebra book this semester is the 1st edition - basically on the cover of the book and on the first few pages it has no "X" edition on it anywhere - if you're talking about a book like "Catcher in the rye" i have idea.. Good luck

The very firs edition or impression of a book do not say anything. Just the year of publishing. The second and later editions will say "2nd, 3rd., etc."...
