"water" is the word that refers to a substance made up of molecules with a chemical composition of 2H's and 1O or H2O for short. Calling water "dihydrogen monoxide" is correct but an unusual and lengthy technical way to refer to water and using it as the name for water would be unnecessarily cumbersome. Then again "hydrogen peroxide" is also known as "dihydrogen dioxide" as well as "H2O2." For similar reasons, I don't think calling peroxide "dihydroxide" (OH)2 is advisable either.TWH 08252006

Dihydrogen monoxide (DHMO) is an obscure name for water, used in hoaxes that illustrate how ignorance of science and one-sided analysis can lead to misplaced fears.

The hoax involves listing strictly negative effects of water, such as erosion or death by drowning, attributing them to "dihydrogen monoxide", and then asking individuals to help control the seemingly dangerous substance. It was apparently created by Eric Lechner and Lars Norpchen in 1990, revised by Craig Jackson in 1994, and was brought to widespread public attention in 1997, when Nathan Zohner, a 14-year-old student, gathered petitions to ban "DHMO" as the basis of his science project, titled "How Gullible Are We?".

Hi. Hydrogen ash? Four H2 molecules combine with two O2 molecules and form two H2O molecules. (At least here on earth.)

I like Hydrogen Hydroxide, or Hydroxic Acid. They sound much scarier. "Water" is much less of a mouthful, just like "gasoline" is easier than 2,2,4-trimethylpentane.
