Right. As a US citizen and an "American" I was pretty confused growing up. I didn't understand why all the other countries had a name and we got United States. I believe it is a great country to live in and they couldn't call us United Statians I guess. But Americans is deceiving. Shouldn't every one from North and South America be called Americans...weird.

I agree with 'rltouhe'. Of course we all have that idea of the American dream, blue eyes, white skin, little Johnny, white picket fence. Of course there are Native Americans who did come from the US land but it was reclaimed. And I think the Native Americans make less of a fuss than the Hispanics. And yes I know they are part Native American, but they are also part Spainish, so why are just making a big deal to us? Reclaim Spain with all that engery you have!
In conclusion, I think it only means having citizenship. Which also means, that anyone, no matter race or orgin, could BECOME one so why be an illegal alien? i'm sure it's not easy to become one but nothing good in life is particularily easy, and if you don't know that, well then I pity you.

Since USA stands for United States of America, I'm guessing that's why they are called Americans. The founding fathers didn't thinf far enough ahead apparently to call it something else, whereas other countries in the continent of America have their own name. I suppose we could call them "United Statesians".....?

Americans are called Americans because we're the only ones whose use that term. People from Canada are called Canadian and people from Mexico are called Mexican. People say they're Asian or European but that's a whole continent too, right? Stop tryng to label us!

North Americans would include Canadians, right?
I suppose you could call us United Statesians of America, but that would sound stupid.
In the UK, we are Yanks.
I like "American" and I'm thankful to be one. I had to earn my citizenship. I came from Asia, but I do not call myself an Asian-American. I am an American.
God bless America and Americans.

that is true but our country name really isn't a name rather than a specification. we don't live in America we live in the united states of America. i guess it's a coin toss on being called uniteds or Americans and Americans won. good question.

We mean white people in the United States. We would like to include Blacks and Hispanics - but - blacks call themselves African Americans - and - hispanics call themselves hispanic Americans. This insistance on their parts to classify themselves as separate and "inferior" to Americans is the reason they feel they will never progress.

Are you kidding? It is common knowledge that the people from the USA are considered Americans and above the US border they are considered to be, " Canadians," and below the US border they are called, "Mexicans!"
This is your social studies lesson for today

an american is anyone who was born on the continent of north and south america, whether colombia, mexico, etc.americans are likely reffered to as such, due to the grammmatical awkwardness of calling them anything else, such as usasians, ustaters, northstatres u are insinuating a prejudice issue, when the problem is clearly grammatical. if u can come up with a snappy, descriptive new title from"united states of america",do let us know!!!!"statsians",perhaps?????ps-oh,and brits...we arent all "yanks"-some of us are from south of the mason-dixon line,y'all...u can call me "belle",thank u !!!!!
