Smitty, I wish I had gone to Berkeley. It's a very high ranked U. I'd have a better job now.

It's function and goal is to provide legal support to individuals who have brought claims against state or federal government, based on violations of the individuals legal and constitutional rights.

In essence, they help people fight back against the government, when they think the government has violated the constitution. Most of their efforts focus on the 1st Amendment, and beyond that the Bill of Rights in general.

I think it's wonderful that there are organizations out there who will help people "fight city hall" and stand up against government tyranny. Especially organizations that will take cases regardless of the viewpoint of the plaintiff.

The ACLU has defended Rush Limbaugh and the American Nazi Party. They have supported Christians in having equal access to school facilities as any other group, and opposed state agencies endorsing Christianity as more valid than other religions.

A lot of people oppose them, because they do take such a wide variety of cases. And even more people oppose them because they help prevent the government from enforcing religious dogma as a matter of law.

But I think that until we have enough separate organizations willing to take on each individual cause, having one organization that fights for everyone's rights is good for everyone.

It is an organization gone bad. They now like to represent or take issues based on an extreme interpretation of the law (which never was intended to be that way). They now work towards the goal of creating problems and hate so that they can feel they have an extra feather on their hat.

The ACLU is an extreme organization that tries to bend the constitution to their will. They are nothing but legal zealots who take laws to their extreme and try to find loopholes in order to further their extreme liberal causes.

The ACLU fights for your civil liberties. Its a pretty good organization. They do hold some anti-liberty positions though, ie Gun Rights.

its a good idea on paper...but it abuses the system, and makes a major deal out of minor issues such as Title IX in schools and immigration

Their function is to spread communism and atheism, and is a bad organization to have. The ACLU sucks.

They are are a watchdog. Watch dogs can make a lot of noise and thus annoying, they don't discrimanate about when they'll bark or who, so they serve a purpose to alert us to possible wrong doing.

Reminds me too much of a token, false front dummy corporation. It looks real, but there's really nothing back of it. So's Amnesty International. Bogus.
