My boss wants me to go to a business class at the local college that I'm really not interested in and have learned about in the past. It's an all day class. I am currently working on my degree, but am on break until winter. This class would be in the fall, one month before I'm getting married so I'm already busy with that. How do I tell him without ruining future opportunities?

It's a one day class on team creativity by the Disney Institute.

Explain the situation to your boss honestly. Ask to take a rain check until after these other life events pass. That way you avoid turning him down, express an interest in furthering your career, and express your appreciation for his interest in your career.

Congrats on your impending marriage!

Good luck!

So your boss wants you to go to a class on company time and you want to say no? If you were my employee, I would see that you had little or no interest in getting ahead, and would take you off of the "high potential" list into the "one of the other people" list.

One day before you get married is going to break you?

Wake up - we do lots of things we don't want to in the business world - I just took 5 classes (one week each) in something I could have taught, because my management believes in "sharpening the saw" - and got my Master's degree when I thought my bachelors was enough (but my employer recommended I go back).

If you know it so well, then go and ace it - it's called being a team player.

It sounds like this is a college type class, meaning you need to go weekly and not just once. If it is just once, just go and suck it up because in the long run it will pay off. If it is more than one day explain that with everything going on it is too much to do and that you've learned the material already, but have examples and something to back that up (ie be able to discuss the material to prove you don't need to go). If he insists ask if you can go at a later date as in the following semester.

Inform your boss that you sincerely appreciate his interest in furthering your education, but you have already completed a very similar class and feel that the time you would have to spend on work for the class could be better spent doing work for your business.

Just like you have explained here! I do not really want to attend the class because....... . I appreciate the opprotunity to go though and would be interested in some other classes later but just don't feel that this is a good time.
